On June 22, 2026, CATL held the Tianheng 2026 Global Launch Event in Munich, Germany, unveiling the world's first station-level sodium-ion energy storage solution and introducing the verified sodium-ion energy storage system - Tianheng Sodium-ion. This system provides customers with a comprehensive and worry-free experience featuring greater stability, higher reliability, and better profitability. At the launch event, CATL announced that both the sodium-ion energy storage solution and its supply chain have reached commercialization level, and large-scale delivery will commence soon.

 

Wu Dianfeng, Chief Technology Officer of CATL's Energy Storage Business Unit and Director of the Energy Storage Technology Center, pointed out, 'Sodium resources are distributed worldwide with abundant reserves, and possess characteristics such as wide temperature range adaptability and long service life. Together with lithium, they form the two cornerstones of the next-generation energy storage system.'

 

A truly excellent energy storage system must not only have economic viability today but also be able to address future uncertainties,' said Xu Jinmei, Chief Technology Officer of CATL's Energy Storage Business Unit and President of Energy Storage Europe Business Department. 'The Tianheng Sodium-ion Energy Storage System is precisely designed to deliver visible certainty to energy storage investors.'

 

The single-set capacity of the Tianheng Sodium-ion Energy Storage System can reach over 30MWh, adopting a fully modular design concept with separate energy cabinets and power cabinets. This system enables a 1GWh station to be equipped with only 34 sets of equipment, significantly simplifying engineering deployment. Meanwhile, the system offers more flexible configuration with decoupled energy and power, supporting flexible configuration of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8-hour energy storage durations. Faulty modules can be quickly isolated and replaced independently, significantly improving the overall station availability rate and reducing operation and maintenance costs.

In terms of safety performance, the Tianheng Sodium-ion Energy Storage System has achieved 'three no's' safety standards: no thermal runaway, no fire, and no explosion. The system uses CATL's self-developed sodium-ion battery cells with intrinsic safety characteristics, and is equipped with a multi-level intelligent protection system covering cell, module, cabinet, and station levels, effectively eliminating safety hazards throughout the entire lifecycle.

 

Regarding lifespan performance, the Tianheng Sodium-ion Energy Storage System supports over 15,000 charge-discharge cycles, with a calendar life exceeding 20 years, which is 20% longer than the industry average level. This long-lifespan advantage enables investors to obtain more stable long-term returns and significantly reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) of energy storage projects.

 

In terms of environmental adaptability, the Tianheng Sodium-ion Energy Storage System demonstrates excellent performance with an operating temperature range of -30°C to 60°C. It can operate normally in harsh environments such as high cold, high temperature, and high altitude without additional heating or cooling equipment, greatly expanding the application scenarios of energy storage systems.

 

In terms of economic benefits, the sodium-ion energy storage solution has obvious cost advantages. The raw material cost of sodium is only about 1/100 of lithium, and the abundant reserves ensure stable raw material supply and price stability. CATL's large-scale production capacity further reduces the system cost, making the investment return period of energy storage projects shortened by 1-2 years compared with traditional lithium-ion energy storage solutions.

 

The launch of CATL's station-level sodium-ion energy storage solution marks an important milestone in the development of the global energy storage industry. It not only enriches the technical routes of the energy storage industry but also provides a more economical and reliable solution for the large-scale development of renewable energy.
